THE CASTLE OF IOANNINA - ΤΗΕ IMPREGNABLE CASTLE CITY...

The castle of Ioannina stands by the lakeshores embracing the Venetian Castle city. There was a time when man used to create beautiful natural artifacts showcasing the natural landscape. One such example is the Castle of Ioannina by the Lake, which was constructed in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian. The Lake was used by the inhabitants as the castle moat.

According to Legend Ali Pasha created an underground tunnel that connects the castle to the island. It is also said that he hid many of his treasures there. Who knows? Since it has not been proven otherwise yet, perhaps the resourceful Ali took this secret with him. As the legend dictates, every night he killed the castle workers so they would not reveal his secrets.

The Lake of Ioannina, the Pamvotida Lake, or the Lake of Lady Frosini is undoubtedly one place strongly interrelated to history and legends. This magical place has been a place of natural beauty since 10.000 B.C. and it is still one of the most alluring attractions in our city. A lakeside stroll to the banks of the lake or admiring it from above is one of the first things a visitor enjoys during his stay in Ioannina. The Island of Lake Pamvotis is the only island without a name in the world. Many visitors have given it names such as "Lady Frosini'' or "Ali Pasha". The truth is that it does not have one. The Island in Pamvotis Lake with its monasteries, the house of Ali Pasha, the enchanting tour that one can do and admire nature and the city from a different perspective, are here for you to discover them.

A STROLL IN “GEFIRAKIA” AT LAKE PAMVOTIDA

Take a stroll to Gefirakia on foot or by bicycle. Nearly six kilometers of coastal, pedestrian, and cycling roads offer a calm ride to the nature of the city of Ioannina. Free bicycles are offered to the guests by Frontzu Politia. Spend some time with yourselves and get yourself relaxed by going to Gefirakia. If you are lucky you will see the horses of the horseback riding club running freely.

The ethnographic museum is housed in the Aslan Mosque, located within the castle walls. The Aslan mosque is a building that is visible from almost every side of the lake. The museum contains three different collections concerning the three different cultures that coexisted over the centuries in Ioannina, the Hebrew, the Christian, and the Ottoman.

THE HEBREW SYNAGOGUE IN IOANNINA

The Jewish Synagogue of Ioannina is one of the oldest sacred buildings of this kind in Greece. The Synagogue has been in Ioannina since the Golden Age of Byzantium. The Jewish community was one of the most important factors in the commercial and economic flourishing of the city of Ioannina until the Second World War and the atrocities of Adolf Hitler. The Jewish community is still present and active today, with the Jewish synagogue as one of the attractions of the Ioannina castle.

The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina is such proof, as it offers an exhibition that extends to 1200 sq.m. with one of the most prominent oracles of Antiquity, the Oracle of Dodoni. BYZANTINE MUSEUM OF IOANNINA - TREASURES, GOLD, AND BRILLIANTS…

The Byzantine Museum, in Ioannina, contains exhibits of the Byzantine as well as the Post-Byzantine period. You can visit the adjacent mosque located in Its Kale but also the "Treasury" which contains real masterpieces of Epirus made of silver and gold, with just one ticket.

ALI PASHA MUSEUM -
THE HOUSE OF ALI PASHA...

The museum of Ali Pasha is located on the island in the Lake of Ioannina, in the house where Ali lived and died. It contains a private collection of his personal belongings, such as his silver musket, as well as exhibits that help you learn about this era. Listen to the Narrator recounting the real reasons for the drowning of Lady Frosini, while you admire historic exhibits and feel the spirit of this era, which is full of magic and legends.

PERAMA CAVE...
IN THE HOUSE OF THE CHTHONIC GODS...

The term Chthonic stands for the adjective "subterranean" and the word describes deities or spirits of the underworld, especially in Ancient Greek mythology. The Cave of Perama: the residence of Pluto and Persephone. The cave of the city of Ioannina is 1,500,000 years old. It was created by the underground riverbed and is adorned with more than 19 kinds of stalactites and stalagmites.

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART THEODORIS PAPAGIANNIS

Perhaps the greatest sculptor alive.

Theodoros Papagiannis is an international artist with some of his works covering surfaces at the largest airports in America. Papagiannis lives and continues his work in the village of Elliniko which is 20 minutes away from Ioannina.

The Museum of Modern Art Theodoris Papagiannis, organizes sculpture symposia, attracting international sculptors, and has turned Ioannina and Elliniko into a unique Museum. You will find scattered exhibits everywhere, which of course like another Ariadne mite lead you to the best exhibition enriched by the career of this exceptional artist.

THE THEATRE AND THE ORACLE OF DODONI

One of the most famous oracles of Antiquity exists in Dodoni. There are two myths about its existence. According to the first one, two women were sold in a marketplace with the first one ending up in Libya and the second one in Thebes where they founded the two oracles of Libya and Dodoni. The second myth states that two pigeons were released. The first one landed in Libya whereas the second one in Dodoni. This marked the establishment of the two oracles.

The ancient Theatre of Dodoni was built during the reign of Pyrrhus and it could accommodate 18.000 people. The ancient Theatre of Dodoni was regarded as the largest of its time.

THE BOAT OF LAKE PAMVOTIDA

The boats of all the lakes in Greece are primitive constructions that do not follow the modern shipbuilding standards. The boat of Lake Pamvotida could not be an exception, as it is perfectly adapted to the environmental conditions, such as small distances, calm and shallow waters, swampy areas, and of course the passages of reeds and aquatic vegetation.
